What inspired me to write this blog about Marela Zacarías's "Coatlicue's Return" Fall 2018 exhibition was its location in Detroit, Michigan which is just an hour away from where I live. A part of me hoped the exhibition was still on display, but unfortunately, it is not. I can only imagine how incredible it would be to see her work in person, where the details, structure, and interplay of lighting would come to life. Seeing Zacarías's art up close would have been an extraordinary honor.

The "Coatlicue's Return" exhibition draws inspiration from urban sites in Detroit, particularly Diego Rivera's Detroit Industry Murals housed at the Detroit Institute of Arts. Zacarías felt a personal connection to Rivera’s work, Aztec mythology, and specifically the goddess Coatlicue, who symbolizes growth, destruction, and rebirth.

Using these inspirations, Zacarías created a stunning collection of sculptures that either stand against walls or hang dramatically from ceilings. These pieces are brought to life through vibrant colors and dynamic forms, transforming the space into a three-dimensional mural that evokes the spirit of specific places, landmarks, and histories.

Through this exhibit, Marela Zacarías not only connects her art to Detroit’s rich cultural and industrial history but also weaves in her personal heritage and artistic voice. After following her work from September until now, I feel I can recognize her art anywhere. Her unique art style is both striking and deeply admirable. I hope to run into her pieces one day in the future and to capture it in person.
