In this blog, rather than focusing on a specific piece by Marela Zacarías, I want to take the time to talk about how gentle, detailed, and careful she is with her work. I watched a video about Marela on her website, Raw/Cooked, and I found myself admiring her meticulous process. She carefully ensures the lines on her pieces are perfect, infuses meaning into every detail, and dedicates so much time to achieving her vision. In the video, she mentioned that it usually takes about a month just to create the structure of her pieces before she even begins to paint them.
Marela has completely changed my perspective on abstract art. Last year, I had to create a birdhouse inspired by an artist who made abstract sculptures. To be completely honest, I didn't enjoy the project because I just couldn't wrap my head around the meaning of abstract art. At the time, I thought it was a whole lot of nothing—just shapes and colors without purpose.
That changed when I came across Marela's work. While choosing an artist for this blog, I discovered Marela and learned that she is from Mexico. I was immediately drawn to her as a Hispanic artist, curious to see what she created. However, when I realized her work was abstract, I wasn't too sure about it at first. But as I continued to watch videos about her art, I felt like I got to know her and her process personally. I began to admire the stories and meaning behind each piece, as well as the time and thought she pours into her work. Marela has truly changed how I view abstract art.
Now, I try to look deeper into pieces, to understand why the artist created them and uncover the stories behind the work. Her dedication has taught me to appreciate art in a new and meaningful way.
