Coming across the Red Meander (2014) sculpture by Marela Zacarías, when I began to read what message, she was conveying through it, stood out to me instantly. I want to explain what the meaning behind this piece and why it's signific is so important, especially to me.

Red Meander (2014) is a permanent installment in Monterrey, Mexico specifically located in a hub for services related to immigration, visas, and other consular affairs. She wanted it to present a welcoming environment to visitors and express that they aren't just getting their green cards or visas but entering a change in their lives. She reflects on how her perspective of the challenges faced by undocumented workers and the harsh realities of deportation.

Moreover, Zacarías expresses a desire to connect with her birthplace while reaching out to others undergoing similar transitions. In her words, she aimed to "meet myself in the middle of it," signifying her intent to blend her journey with the collective experiences of those facing the immigration system.

For me, this theme resonates deeply. Although I am from the United States, my dad is not. I have witnessed the challenges he faced with immigration and how he was treated. Despite these challenges, he takes great pride in the life he has built here and how much his life has changed. Having lived in the States for over 20 years, he has never given up on achieving his goals for himself and our family. I believe what Marela has created offers hope to those planning to come to America and pursue their dreams.
