I want to share my insight and admiration for Marela Zacarías' solo exhibition in today's blog. This exhibition took place at MadArt Studio in Seattle, WA. During the process of making this exhibition, Marcela returned to when she first started as an artist, doing mural painting. This was an exciting process for her because she was combining her sculptures and paintings into a solo exhibition. Let's dig deeper into the meaning behind her exhibition and what the process was like. Please take a look and examine the photos of the exhibition below and study how it was made. What was the inspiration for it? What does it remind you of? Just expand your mind and admire this amazing exhibition!
When COVID-19 came about, Zacarías was in Cuernavaca, Mexico, and stayed with her family for a few months. This caused her to reflect on societal and political unrest facing in our present world. Her inspiration for this exhibit was the Temple of the Feathered Serpent in Xochicalco. It was made in Mesoamerica by the Aztecs and Mayans after their empires collapsed. She took this as a symbol as once empires collapsed, what do we build and how do we make something new?
The sculpture in the middle of the inspired temple is named Cihuacoatl. Cihuacoatl translates to "female serpent". In Aztec mythology, she was the one who gave strength to women during childbirth. Zacarías dedicated this pyramid to her and said that she is the heart of this exhibition.
For her murals, she wanted them to reflect the pyramid structure in the middle. Her mural work reflects the deep connection to ancient architecture but with a twist of modern abstraction.

Overall, I absolutely enjoyed learning about this solo exhibition of hers. I admire the way she thinks deeply about her work and gets amazing inspiration for it. For her to take ancient architecture and its history behind it was amazing to me because of the way she made it reflect the past but also move toward the future and start new. It spoke to me, and her presentation of it in her art style was tremendously admirable. It warms my heart to see how she incorporates her culture into her work as well. I feel like I'm learning more about my culture through her and her pieces. She inspires me to examine deeper into art pieces and see where the inspiration comes from and how I can generate that creativity for myself.
Thank you for coming along with me to examine and reflect on Marela Zacarías' solo exhibition at MadArt Studio in Seattle, WA. I cannot wait to share more about who Marela Zacarías is and her art.
